The Caucasian War was the long Russian conquest of the North Caucasus, which was carried out in the face of fierce resistance from the mountain peoples, such as the Chechens, the Circassians and the peoples of Dagestan. Russia advanced by building fortified lines and clearing forests, and it fought a long war against the imam Shamil, who led a state in Chechnya and Dagestan until his surrender. The war ended with the defeat of the Circassians on the Black Sea coast. Hundreds of thousands of Circassians were killed or expelled to the Ottoman Empire, an episode that many historians and some governments call a genocide, though Russia rejects this view.
