Caesar's Civil War was the conflict between Julius Caesar and the Roman senatorial faction led by Pompey, which began when Caesar crossed the Rubicon river with his army, defying the Senate's order to disband it. Caesar took Italy quickly, and Pompey withdrew to Greece, where Caesar defeated him at the battle of Pharsalus. Pompey fled to Egypt and was murdered, and Caesar pursued his enemies to Egypt, where he supported Cleopatra, to Africa, where he won at Thapsus, and to Spain, where the war ended at Munda. Caesar became dictator, but the Roman Republic did not recover, and he was assassinated in 44 BCE.
