Thomas Aquinas was born in 1225 in castle of the counts of Aquino. An Italian Dominican friar, philosopher and theologian, Aquinas studied in Naples, Paris and Cologne, under Albert the Great, and taught at the University of Paris. His Summa Theologiae and Summa contra Gentiles combined the philosophy of Aristotle with Christian doctrine and gave a systematic account of faith and reason, including arguments for the existence of God known as the Five Ways. His thought, called Thomism, became the main intellectual tradition of the Catholic Church. He died on the way to the Council of Lyon and was canonised in 1323. He was later named a Doctor of the Church.
