Strabo was born in 63 BCE in Amasia. A Greek geographer, philosopher and historian, Strabo was born in Amaseia in Asia Minor, in the Roman province of Pontus. He traveled widely, to Rome, Egypt and parts of Asia Minor, and wrote a lost historical work followed by his Geography, in seventeen books, which survives and describes the world known to Greeks and Romans in the time of Augustus. It combines physical description with history, customs and politics of each region. A follower of Stoic philosophy, he is a major source of information on ancient geography, and later European scholars drew on him heavily.
