Robert Boyle was born on 25 January 1627 in Lismore Castle. An Anglo-Irish natural philosopher, Boyle is regarded as one of the founders of modern chemistry and of the experimental method. Working with his assistant Robert Hooke, he built an air pump and showed that the volume of a gas varies inversely with its pressure at constant temperature, a relation known as Boyle's law. In The Sceptical Chymist he criticized the traditional Aristotelian four-element theory and argued for a corpuscular view of matter. He was a founder of the Royal Society, was deeply religious and funded translations of the Bible and lectures defending Christianity.
