Mark Antony was born in 83 BCE in Rome. A Roman general and politician, Mark Antony was a loyal supporter of Julius Caesar and served as his lieutenant in the Gallic and civil wars. After Caesar's assassination he delivered the funeral oration that turned public opinion against the conspirators, then formed the Second Triumvirate with Octavian and Lepidus. They defeated Brutus and Cassius at Philippi. Antony then took charge of the eastern provinces and began a famous alliance with Cleopatra of Egypt. The rivalry with Octavian led to war, and his defeat at the naval Battle of Actium was followed by his suicide in Alexandria.
