Lope de Vega was born on 25 November 1562 in Madrid. A Spanish playwright and poet of the Golden Age, Lope de Vega is credited with establishing the model of Spanish national theatre, the comedia, which mixed tragedy and comedy and broke from classical rules. He wrote hundreds of plays, with titles such as Fuenteovejuna, The Dog in the Manger and The Knight of Olmedo. He also wrote lyric poetry, novels and epics. His life was turbulent, full of love affairs, exile and military service, including with the Spanish Armada, and he became a priest later in life. He was known as the Phoenix of Wits.
