Leonhard Euler was born on 15 April 1707 in Basel. A Swiss mathematician and physicist, Euler was one of the most prolific mathematicians in history. He worked for most of his career at the academies of Saint Petersburg and Berlin, and he continued to produce work after losing his sight. He made fundamental contributions to calculus, number theory, mechanics, optics and astronomy, and he founded graph theory by solving the problem of the Seven Bridges of Königsberg. He introduced much of the notation still in use, including the symbols e, i and the function notation f(x), and the formula known as Euler's identity. His collected works fill dozens of large volumes.
