John Forbes Nash was born on 13 June 1928 in Bluefield. An American mathematician, Nash made fundamental contributions to game theory, differential geometry and partial differential equations. His concept of the Nash equilibrium, set out in his doctoral thesis at Princeton, describes a situation in which no player can gain by changing strategy alone, and has had a lasting influence on economics. He shared the 1994 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. He suffered from schizophrenia for decades, an experience portrayed in the biography A Beautiful Mind and the film based on it. He later received the Abel Prize and died in a taxi accident in New Jersey, with his wife Alicia.
