Jean Piaget was born on 9 August 1896 in Neuchâtel. A Swiss psychologist and biologist, Piaget transformed the understanding of how children think. After training in biology, he turned to the study of intelligence by observing his own children and others, and proposed that children pass through a series of stages of cognitive development, from sensorimotor to formal operational thought, constructing knowledge actively through interaction with the world. His theory, called genetic epistemology, was set out in books such as The Language and Thought of the Child. He worked at the University of Geneva and founded the International Center for Genetic Epistemology. His influence on education and developmental psychology was very great.
