James Monroe was born on 28 April 1758 in Monroe Hall. The fifth President of the United States, Monroe was a Virginian who fought in the Revolutionary War, served as a diplomat, and helped negotiate the Louisiana Purchase. As president from 1817 to 1825 he presided over the so-called Era of Good Feelings, a time of reduced party conflict, and signed the Missouri Compromise of 1820. His government obtained Florida from Spain. In 1823 he announced the Monroe Doctrine, warning European powers against new colonization in the Americas, which became a lasting principle of American foreign policy. The capital of Liberia, Monrovia, is named after him. He died on the Fourth of July.
