Henri Poincaré was born on 29 April 1854 in Nancy. A French mathematician, theoretical physicist and philosopher of science, Poincare is considered one of the last universalists, who made important contributions to many areas of mathematics. He founded the field of algebraic topology, studied the three-body problem and in doing so laid the foundations of chaos theory, and developed the theory of automorphic functions. He also formulated key parts of what became special relativity, independently of Einstein. His Poincare conjecture, concerning three-dimensional spheres, remained unsolved for a century until Grigori Perelman proved it. He wrote popular books on science and its methods.
