Grazia Deledda was born on 27 September 1871 in Nuoro. An Italian novelist from Sardinia, Deledda wrote about the island's rural society, its traditions and its landscape, exploring themes of passion, sin and fate. Largely self-taught, she began publishing in her teens and moved to Rome after marriage. Her best-known novels include Elias Portolu, Ashes, Reeds in the Wind and Cosima, her posthumously published autobiographical work. In 1926 she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for idealistically inspired writings, becoming the first Italian woman to win it. She died of breast cancer in Rome.
