Birth of Fibonacci

1170

Fibonacci was born in 1170 in Pisa. An Italian mathematician from Pisa, Leonardo of Pisa, later nicknamed Fibonacci, grew up in North Africa, where his father worked as a customs official, and learned the Hindu-Arabic numeral system on his travels. In 1202 he published the Liber Abaci, a book that explained the decimal system and its use in commercial arithmetic, which helped replace Roman numerals in Europe. The book also posed a problem about breeding rabbits whose solution gave the sequence now named after him, in which each number is the sum of the two before it, though the sequence was already known in Indian mathematics. He enjoyed the patronage of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II. The dates given are approximate.
