Clara Zetkin was born on 5 July 1857 in Königshain-Wiederau. A German Marxist teacher, journalist and politician, Zetkin was a leading figure of the socialist women's movement. She edited the Social Democratic women's paper Die Gleichheit for 25 years, and organized the first International Socialist Women's Conference in 1907. In 1910 she proposed that March 8 be observed as International Women's Day. She broke with the Social Democrats over their support for the First World War and became a founding member of the German Communist Party, serving in the Reichstag until 1933. She fled to the Soviet Union shortly before her death.
