Charles I of England was born on 19 November 1600 in Dunfermline Palace. King of England, Scotland and Ireland, Charles I came to the throne in 1625 and believed firmly in the divine right of kings. His reign was marked by conflicts with Parliament over taxation and religion, and by his attempt to rule for eleven years without calling it. His attempt to impose a prayer book in Scotland led to the Bishops' Wars, and the Irish rebellion and mistrust of his policies led to the English Civil War. After defeat by the Parliamentarians he was tried for treason by a high court and beheaded outside the Banqueting House in Whitehall, and the monarchy was abolished until 1660.
