Carl Jung was born on 26 July 1875 in Kesswil. A Swiss psychiatrist and psychotherapist, Jung worked at the Burghölzli clinic in Zurich and for several years collaborated closely with Sigmund Freud, until they broke over the nature of the unconscious in 1913. He founded analytical psychology, with concepts that include the collective unconscious, shared inherited structures of the mind that he called archetypes, and the process of individuation, the integration of the personality. He also described introversion and extraversion, which later fed into personality typologies. Jung was deeply interested in dreams, mythology, religion and alchemy, and his Red Book recorded his inner experiences. His ideas have been widely influential in psychology, the arts and popular culture, though many scientists criticize them as unscientific.
