Andrew Johnson was born on 29 December 1808 in Raleigh. The 17th President of the United States, Johnson was a self-taught tailor from North Carolina who rose to become a Tennessee senator and the only Southern senator to remain loyal to the Union. He became Lincoln's vice president in 1865 and president after Lincoln's assassination. His lenient approach to the defeated South and opposition to civil rights for freed slaves put him at odds with the Republican Congress, which overrode his vetoes and passed the Fourteenth Amendment. In 1868 the House impeached him, and the Senate acquitted him by a single vote. His administration did purchase Alaska from Russia in 1867. He later returned to the Senate.
