Birth of Ana Bolena

1501

Ana Bolena was born in 1501 in Blickling Hall. The second wife of Henry VIII of England and the mother of Elizabeth I, Anne Boleyn was a lady-in-waiting at court, educated in the Netherlands and France. Henry sought to end his marriage to Catherine of Aragon in order to marry her, a pursuit that led to England's break with Rome, and they married in 1533. When she failed to give Henry a male heir, he turned against her, and she was arrested on charges of adultery, incest and treason, which most historians believe were false. She was beheaded at the Tower of London by a swordsman brought from France.
