The American Indian Wars were the many armed conflicts between Indigenous peoples and European colonists and, later, the United States and Canada, from the early 17th century to the early 20th. They began with conflicts such as the Anglo-Powhatan wars at Jamestown and the Pequot War, followed by King Philip's War and the colonial wars in which Indigenous nations allied with France or Britain. After American independence came the Northwest Indian War, Tecumseh's resistance, the forced removals of the 1830s, the Plains wars, the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876 and the massacre at Wounded Knee in 1890. Indigenous nations lost most of their lands through warfare, disease, broken treaties and displacement. The last armed clashes came in the early 20th century.
