On 18 March 1965 Alexei Leonov left the Voskhod 2 capsule through an inflatable airlock and floated outside for about twelve minutes, attached by a tether. His suit ballooned in the vacuum so much that he could not bend to reach the hatch, and he had to let out some air to re-enter. After landing in a snowy forest in the Urals far off target, the crew spent a night in the wilderness before rescue. Edward White made the first American spacewalk three months later.
