The 2022 Kazakh unrest began in the oil-producing region of Mangystau, when a sharp rise in the price of liquefied petroleum gas, widely used as car fuel, led to protests in the town of Zhanaozen. The demonstrations spread across the country and developed into broader demands over living costs and political change, and in Almaty some protests turned violent, with official buildings attacked. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev declared a state of emergency, and he asked for help from the Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organization, which sent troops. Dozens of people died, and thousands were detained. The crisis was followed by a power struggle with the former president Nursultan Nazarbayev's circle.
