The Scottish independence referendum was held on 18 September 2014 and asked voters in Scotland the question Should Scotland be an independent country? It was held under the Edinburgh Agreement between the Scottish government, led by Alex Salmond's Scottish National Party, and the United Kingdom government. Turnout was very high at about 85 percent, and the independence side, led by the Yes Scotland campaign, lost to the Better Together campaign by roughly 55 percent to 45 percent. Salmond resigned as first minister, and the three main Westminster parties promised more powers for the Scottish Parliament, which were later delivered through the Scotland Act 2016. The issue remained alive in Scottish politics, especially after the UK voted to leave the European Union in 2016.
